The fix, by hand
  1. Review object access patterns in Cloud Monitoring → storage.googleapis.com/api/request_count by method. Confirm GET frequency drops past a known age threshold.
  2. For unpredictable access, switch to Autoclass: gcloud storage buckets update gs://‹name› --enable-autoclass.
  3. For known-cold prefixes, write a lifecycle.json with two rules: (a) SetStorageClass to NEARLINE on objects with age at least 30 days, (b) SetStorageClass to COLDLINE on objects with age at least 90 days.
  4. Apply: gcloud storage buckets update gs://‹name› --lifecycle-file=lifecycle.json.
  5. Be aware of minimum-storage-duration billing: Nearline 30d, Coldline 90d, Archive 365d. Premature deletes are charged for the full minimum.
  6. Validate the transition timeline in Cloud Console → Cloud Storage → Bucket → Lifecycle tab.
