- Confirm the disk is detached: gcloud compute disks describe ‹name› --zone=‹zone› --format='value(users)' should be empty.
- Search Terraform / Deployment Manager state for the disk name. Confirm it's not about to be re-attached by a pending apply.
- Snapshot the disk first: gcloud compute disks snapshot ‹name› --snapshot-names=‹name›-final --zone=‹zone›.
- Verify the snapshot finishes successfully (gcloud compute snapshots describe ...).
- Delete the disk: gcloud compute disks delete ‹name› --zone=‹zone›.
- Track storage spend in Cloud Billing for 24h to confirm the line item drops.
