- Review 30-day CloudWatch metrics (CPU, memory (CloudWatch agent), network and EBS IOPS) to confirm the new family meets P99 load.
- Validate workload compatibility with the recommended family (e.g. m4 → m7i needs Nitro / ENA driver; t2 → t4g needs ARM compatibility).
- Compute Optimizer → Recommendations → cross-check the AWS-suggested family for this instance.
- EC2 → select the resource → Stop → Actions → Instance settings → Change instance type → pick target SKU → Start.
- Monitor application metrics for 48h post-cutover; roll back to the prior SKU if latency or error rate regresses.
- If the instance is in an ASG, edit the launch template, then trigger Instance refresh. Do not modify the live instance.
