Minimum viable tag set (MVT)

1. Concept

Minimum Viable Tag (MVT) set: the smallest collection of tags that enables team attribution, environment routing, and cost-center alignment. The MVT is the floor: every resource has these; some resources have more.

The four tags solve 80% of the use cases that justify tagging in the first place.

Why exactly 4 tags

The MVT is the discipline. Every additional tag is debt unless it has a clear, justified use case.

Allowed-value lists per tag

For each MVT tag, the policy specifies allowed values:

Allowed-value lists prevent the variant proliferation that destroys reports.

The right combo: IaC validation (for new resources) + auto-tagger (for legacy/manual) + cloud policy (defense in depth).

Building beyond MVT: when to extend

Don’t grow the tag set without an explicit decision. Each tag = ongoing governance overhead.

Tag value standardization rules

These rules are arbitrary in detail; the discipline is having and following ANY rules. Pick the convention, document it, enforce it.

Aim for preventive as primary; detective as backup; reactive only if neither available.

The validation runs at terraform plan; blocks the apply if any rule fails. New engineers learn the policy instantly through the error message.
