X-Ray High Sampling Rate
X-Ray bills per trace recorded, so a high sampling rate multiplies cost while adding little to a statistical picture the default rate already gives.

AWS
Found, explained, handed over.
Findings with a dollar figure attached, idle, oversized, orphaned, unscheduled and undiscounted spend.
Detect
ZopNight checks this automatically across AWS, with read-only access to the account.
Explain
Every finding says exactly what to change: Lower the X-Ray sampling rate. Where the saving can be proven it is priced; where it cannot, the finding says so.
Fix
The finding opens with the fix already written out, step by step, so it is one ticket, not an investigation.
- Applies to
- X-Ray on AWS
- The fix, by hand
- X-Ray → Sampling → review current rules (Default + any service-specific).
- For each high-traffic service, create a custom rule: reservoir 1 req/s + fixed rate 1% (or 0.1% on very high TPS).
- Keep error-trace rules at 100% so latency / failure investigations stay sharp.
- Observe the Recorded Traces metric for ~24h. Adjust if the budget is still over.
- Disable X-Ray entirely on services where APM tooling already covers the traces.
These are the steps the finding carries in the product.
