The fix, by hand on Azure
  1. VM → Monitoring → Insights → Enable. This deploys the Azure Monitor Agent (AMA). Do not re-enable the legacy Log Analytics agent / MMA path. It retired 2024-08-31.
  2. Attach (or create) a Data Collection Rule routing performance counters, syslog, and Windows Event Logs to a Log Analytics workspace.
  3. Validate guest metrics arrive in Monitor → Metrics (namespace = Guest) within ~10 minutes.
  4. Create baseline alerts: CPU over 90% sustained 10 min, available memory under 10%, disk free under 15%.
  5. Pin the VM Insights workbook for the VM's resource group so on-call has one-click visibility.
