  1. Confirm this is a non-production database that does not require point-in-time recovery.
  2. Open RDS → Databases → select → Modify → Backup → Backup retention period.
  3. Set the retention period to 0 (disables automated backups / PITR) or 1 day. This reclaims the automated-backup storage billed above the free allowance.
  4. Ensure any remaining recovery needs are met by manual snapshots before applying.
  5. Apply immediately or during the maintenance window; verify the backup-storage charge drops on the next billing cycle.
