Idle Azure SQL Managed Instance
A managed instance bills for its provisioned vCores and storage continuously and cannot be stopped, only scaled or deleted.

Azure
Found, explained, handed over.
Findings with a dollar figure attached, idle, oversized, orphaned, unscheduled and undiscounted spend.
Detect
ZopNight checks this automatically across Azure, with read-only access to the account.
Explain
Every finding says exactly what to change: Downsize the idle SQL managed instance. Where the saving can be proven it is priced; where it cannot, the finding says so.
Fix
The finding opens with the fix already written out, step by step, so it is one ticket, not an investigation.
- Applies to
- SQL Managed Instances on Azure
- The fix, by hand
- Open Portal → SQL managed instances → the resource, confirm CPU and I/O are flat over the last 14 days.
- Open Pricing tier and consider scaling down the vCore count; review the offline-window warning before applying.
- If the instance is genuinely unused, migrate any remaining databases to Azure SQL Database first, then delete the managed instance.
These are the steps the finding carries in the product.
- Category
