1. Concept

Budget thresholds (50%, 75%, 90%, 100%, 110%) need escalation chains; explicit answers to “who gets notified at this crossing” and “what action they should take.” Without explicit escalation, notifications fire to channels nobody owns, alerts accumulate, and budget discipline silently dies.

The same threshold percentages produce very different escalation chains based on the budget’s environment and criticality.

Why explicit escalation matters

Escalation timing

The mechanic that turns notifications into actual response:

This creates the cascade. Without SLAs, lower-severity alerts can be ignored indefinitely; with SLAs and auto-escalation, the chain enforces itself.

For production budgets, run a quarterly escalation drill; simulate an overrun; walk through the chain; confirm each step works as expected. This catches broken integrations before they matter.
