ZopNight for Engineering Managers: Your Team's Cloud Spend
You are asked why your team's number went up. You need to see it first, and hand the fix to the right engineer.
An engineering manager is accountable for a slice of the bill, not all of it: the services their team owns, the environments it runs, and any change in either. The FinOps Framework puts it as a principle: “Everyone takes ownership for their technology usage.” In practice that means three things. Know your number before someone else asks, notice when it moves, and route the fix into the backlog your team already works from.
Your team’s number
Showback gives each team its own view with a split by provider and resource type and a trend chart. A resource owned by more than one team has its cost split equally between them; resources with no owner are tracked as unattributed. The Cost Flow diagram can highlight unattributed spend so gaps in ownership are visible at a glance. See team showback.
A budget that warns before month-end
Team budgets can be set per cloud account, resource, resource group or AI provider. Status reads green, yellow at your alert threshold and red when over. Month-to-date spend is computed live on each read, and threshold alerts go to your team’s notification channel. See team budgets.
When the number jumps
Cost anomaly detection runs daily at team scope as well as organization, account, resource group and resource scope. Each anomaly carries a root-cause analysis: an instance resize, a new resource, an expired reservation or savings plan, a failed schedule, or unscheduled usage growth. Shifts of cost between teams with little net change are suppressed as redistribution, so a re-org does not page you. See detecting cost anomalies.
Knowing who created it
Ownership detection reads cloud activity logs to name who created and last modified each resource, and marks whether that person is still an active identity or has departed. That shortens the “whose is this?” conversation for leftover resources.
Routing the fix
With Jira connected, a recommendation becomes a Jira issue carrying the resource, the saving and the suggested fix. Status syncs both ways, and reassigning the Jira issue updates the recommendation’s owner. Duplicate tickets for the same problem are prevented. A policy can open tickets automatically for matching findings. See Jira tickets from recommendations.
Adding people
Team membership uses a picker of existing organization users, several at a time, and members inherit their role’s permissions only over the team’s resources.
Questions we get a lot.
If yours isn't here, email us and we'll answer directly.
Can my engineers see other teams' resources?
Not if their access is team-scoped. Team members inherit their role's policies only over the resource IDs assigned to the team.
Will a team re-org trigger cost anomaly alerts?
Cost moving between teams with a net change under 20% is treated as redistribution, and both anomalies are suppressed.
