ZopNight for CTOs: Owning the Cloud Bill Without Slowing Teams
The board asks what the cloud costs and why. Engineering asks you not to take its tools away. Both questions land on the same desk.
A CTO carries two accountabilities that pull against each other. One is financial: explaining cloud spend, its trend and what it buys, to a CEO, CFO or board. The other is delivery: keeping teams shipping without a cost programme that turns into a ticket queue. The FinOps Framework describes the Leadership persona as the one that “sets and promotes overall business and technical objectives” and “empowers organizational alignment to prioritize FinOps initiatives”. The job is to set direction and make the numbers trustworthy, not to approve instance types.
What you need, and what ZopNight provides
A number you can defend. When billing sync is connected, ZopNight overlays the provider’s own billing data (AWS Cost Explorer or CUR 2.0, Azure Cost Management, GCP BigQuery export net of credits) and adds spend it cannot match to a resource, such as taxes, fees and data transfer, as a separate unattributed figure so the headline reconciles to the invoice.
A savings figure that does not double-count. The recommendations export is an Excel workbook that opens with an executive summary: totals and breakdowns by recommendation type, cloud, service, severity and status. Savings are de-duplicated per resource, because a resize and a schedule on the same instance cannot both be fully banked.
Proof that recommendations were acted on. Each recommendation carries its own status (what the team says it did) and a separate resolution state (what ZopNight measured afterwards), so “applied” and “verified” are not confused.
Cost tied to the business. Unit economics plots infrastructure cost per active user, order or thousand requests on the cost trend chart, using business metrics you push or ZopNight pulls from your endpoint. That is the figure that shows whether growth is efficient.
A leadership view without a custom build. Dashboards ship with Executive, Engineering and FinOps presets, and any dashboard can be set as the organization default.
Guardrails instead of approvals. Budgets per team, account, resource group or AI provider alert at a threshold you set. Team-scoped RBAC lets each team act on its own resources and nothing else. The AI Gateway puts hard budgets on per-team LLM keys.
A low-risk way to begin
Connect accounts read-only. That gives discovery, cost reporting and recommendations with no ability to start, stop or change anything; write actions are blocked server-side until an account is switched to read + write. Review the recommendation workbook with your engineering leads before deciding what to automate. For the broader discipline, see FinOps and unit economics for cloud cost; for spend on model APIs, see LLM cost governance.
Questions we get a lot.
If yours isn't here, email us and we'll answer directly.
Will the ZopNight total match our cloud invoice?
For billing-connected accounts, ZopNight adds unmatched billing lines such as taxes, fees and data transfer to its headline so it reconciles with the invoice. Team and tag views show attributed spend only.
Do the savings figures add up across recommendations?
The export's headline savings are de-duplicated per resource, so overlapping options on the same resource are not summed. Breakdown rows may not add up to the total, and the workbook says so.
