Regions, time zones and data protection law for cloud teams in Brazil.

Brazil's cloud capacity sits around Sao Paulo: AWS sa-east-1, Google Cloud southamerica-east1 in Osasco, and Azure brazilsouth, with a second Azure region (brazilsoutheast) in Rio de Janeiro.

## Cloud regions in Brazil

| Provider | Region | Location |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | `sa-east-1` | Sao Paulo |
| Google Cloud | `southamerica-east1` | Osasco, Sao Paulo |
| Azure | `brazilsouth` | Sao Paulo State |
| Azure | `brazilsoutheast` | Rio |

Compare Sao Paulo prices with US regions for your exact instance types before deciding what must run locally. Where the local price is higher, every idle hour in Brazil costs more than the same idle hour elsewhere.

## Scheduling on local time

America/Sao_Paulo covers Sao Paulo, Rio and Brasilia. Manaus and Recife have their own zone entries. Brazil stopped observing daylight saving time in 2019, so the offset to US and European teams now shifts only when they change their clocks.

Time zones: `America/Sao_Paulo`, `America/Manaus`, `America/Recife`. Currency: BRL.

## Data protection law

The Lei Geral de Protecao de Dados Pessoais (LGPD, Law 13,709 of 2018) is Brazil's general data protection law. Review its rules on international transfers before hosting Brazilian personal data outside the country.
