This is the practical version, the one you can follow in a single sitting. It starts read-only, touches no production resource by default, and every step is reversible, so there is no point at which you are committed to something you cannot undo. Budget about 15 minutes. Before you start you will want: An AWS account with ElastiCache clusters; CloudWatch monitoring enabled; A ZopNight account.

## Why this is safe to do today

### Can I stop and start ElastiCache clusters?

ElastiCache does not support native stop/start. ZopNight works around this by taking a snapshot, deleting the cluster, and recreating from the snapshot on the next scheduled start. All cached data is preserved in the snapshot.
